Soviet Guards units, please explain

How did a unit gain promotion to "Guards" ?

Did they have a better scale of equipment and supplies?

Did any Guards units lose their title?

The "Guards" title was normally simply an honorific, used to denote a unit that had fought gallantly, or well above average. I can't say for certain that it 'guaranteed' them better logistical support, but it probably didn't hurt. I am not aware of any Guards units that lost that honorific.
