Luftwaffe sorties in the French Campaign

Postby gajabhau on Sun Jan 27, 2008 5:06 pm

I want to know the number of sorties made by the Luftwaffe on each day during the period May 10 to June 1, 1945, preferably in separate figures for fighters and bombers. I shall be obliged if anyone could give me this information and cite the source as well.

To be honest, I have no idea... Unfortunately, my knowledge is restricted to the land war...

Did a google search deliver some results?

Maybe some other members can put you in the right direction.

No, google search did not produce any results. I have posted the same question on, besides this site, on (1)Axis history forum (2) Luftwaffe and axis air forces, and (3) World war two talk. But no luck yet, though the question has been viewed by more than a hundred persons (putting all these sites together) so far. I have also consulted three or four books on Luftwaffe and the site "World war II day by day". But no reasult so far. I did get, in one book, the number of sorties for the period May 10 to May 15,1940, buy nothing for the period thereafter.

Well, this is a very difficult question to answer, because history is written by the victors, and that wasn't Germany, luckily!

Take a look at this link: http://www.lesbutler.ip3.co.uk/jg26/thtrlosses.htm

It's about Luftwaffe losses in the different campaigns, maybe ouy can extrapolate the actual sorties.

This is what I could find on the battle of Sedan:

"The Luftwaffe committed two Stukageschwader to the assault flying 300 sorties against French positions, with Stukageschwader 77 alone flying 201 individual missions. By the nine Kampfgeschwader committed, a total of 3,940 sorties were flown, often in Gruppe strength."

Thanks, Patton 76. I have just consulted the site mentioned by you. It does not answer my question.I agree with you that " history is written by the victors, and that wasn't Germany, luckily". But after all the victors had the possession of the Luftwaffe records which were later returned to Germany. So there must be someone who could get access to the relevent data. Anyway thanks for your help. Please keep my question in mind and kindly let me know if you find anything useful. I shall, of course, post in this forum any information which I might get about this thread.
