Could Hawaii have been invaded?

Postby patton76 on Tue Nov 27, 2007 4:36 am

We all know that about the attack on Pearl Harbour, but what sort of troop concentrations were on the Islands in Dec 1941? Was invasion even on the Japanese Agenda? And if so could it have worked. Your opinions and knowledge on this would be most welcome.

As far as I can find there were about 35000 army troops on Hawaii. So apart from a crippled Navy and Airforce there still was a considerable fighting force on Hawaii.

Japan was doing in a sense the same as the US would do a couple of years later: island hopping, in this case to expand the defensive/offensive line.

And I have to check the literature on the subject, but there were advanced plans for such an invasion after Midway was taken (which went wrong, as we all know).

The attack on Pearl Harbor was the most successful attack done by Japanese during that period. The US troops concentration there were enough. But such an attack was not expected there. It was the problem that US troops faced. Otherwise Japanese had planned the attack well.
