The best tank of World War II

Postby patton76 on Tue Nov 27, 2007 1:51 am

The German King Tiger was heavily armoured, but was poor in speed and manoeuvrability, The Sherman was very fast to produce, but lacked armour, and so on...

Which, in your opinion, was the best overall tank in World War II?

I've added some in a the poll, if you think some tank who is not in the poll deserves to be named the best tank in WW II, post it here, and I'll add it to the poll.

I would like to add 2...

What about the Pzkfw IV and the Cromwell based types.

Both were the workhorse counterparts of Sherman and T-34, but in more versatile use.

Yesterday I saw a documentary on Discovery Civilisation, it was a Sherman vs Tiger comparison.

Although the Tiger was better armored and had a better gun, the Sherman won the contest because it was mass produced and it's sheer of numbers, so that for every Sherman that was destroyed a new one was built, something the germans couldn't.

So, if we have to believe Discovery Civilisation, the Sherman wins vs the Tiger.

Junkers,

Why did you choose the PzKw IV? It was the workhorse of the Wehrmacht, but even a Sherman could match it.

So, why the PzKw IV?

I chose the Panther, but not just because it looks bad-*ss!

Overall, in my opinion, it had the best mix of gun/optics, speed, armor, maneuverability, an survivability. You could certainly kill any tank with the right weapon, or an appropriate amount of luck, but if someone told me I was about to time-travel back and become a Panzermann, I'd opt for the Panther.

Tom,

I couldn't agree with you more!

But I'm still a firefly lover! :-)
